What Can I Do To Ensure I Reach my Goals in 2020?

It’s a New Year and a new decade, which makes now the perfect time to look at our dreams and goals and start making them happen.  But, the key is to make sure we don’t forget about or abandon our resolutions, as resolutions without a plan is just wishful thinking.

Here are some proven ways and steps you can take in 2020 to turn your goals into reality:

Clarity

Firstly, get really clear about your goals by asking these questions:

  • What do you want and what’s really important to you?
  • Why do you want to achieve this? What will you gain?  If you can’t answer right away with four or five reasons why you want this, then it’s unlikely you’ll ever reach this goal.
  • Is it your goal, or are you setting a goal because you feel you should do it (family, peer, societal pressures; the old version of you, etc.)?  Instead, make a list of the top 5 goals that are really your own.

Also, take time to get clear on what has held you back in the past and what bad habits would you need to drop in order to succeed.

Get SMART

Don’t make the same old mistake as many people make.  Once you get clear on what goals you’re setting and why, you want to make sure that your goals are SMART.  Creating SMART goals gives you direction and helps you see if you’re getting closer to your target or stagnating.

Basically, your goals are supposed to be:

Specific – The more specific you can get, the better.

Measurable – Break your goal into doable steps, daily, weekly and monthly; focus on accomplishing one, then head on to the next one.

Attainable – What skills, tools, or resources do you need to reach your goal?  If it’s not realistically achievable, change your goal to something you can accomplish.

Relevant – Does the goal fit with the overall plan you have?  Remember your Why’s!

Time Bound or Time Sensitive – You need a finish line, so take that goal, create a plan, break it all the way down to daily activities, and then give yourself a deadline.

Write It

Write down your specific goals along with all the steps it’ll take for you to get there. Seeing your goals on paper (or on one of the online tools) will help you hold yourself accountable and track your progress along the way.

You can categorize them and design a specific plan for each area of your life, such as:

Financial; Career; Education/Skill Development; Personal Development; Health/Wellbeing; Social.

Visualize

Research has shown that visualization techniques change the structure of the brain consistent with what you want to achieve.  If you take time to think about, feel, and see yourself being in a more positive work environment, better health, a new home, or whatever you are wanting to achieve – then you are much more likely to do it in real life.  So, make sure you spend a few minutes each day to visualize a scenario where you have already achieved your goal.

Motivate Yourself

As you move along with steps and you begin to lose focus and motivation, refer to your list of reasons why you want this and why you need to keep going.  This will help you re-energize your goals.

Remember to use your imagination, get creative, and use any outside help you can get to support you in achieving your goals.
